Acrylic Landscape and Sky in Process

I love country rural scenes in nature.  Here is a dirt road with a mountain range in the background.  Also a large hay field with bales of hay.  I have been lately drawn to the dirt road or path in my landscapes.  When an artist uses a path whether that be a paved road, dirt road, gravel road, or even a trail their intention is to direct the viewer's eye through the composition to the focal point.  Here the focal point is in the distant background.

To begin with I used raw umber as the under painting to lay out the composition design and establish the illusion of depth with one point perspective.  One point perspective is when an object in a two deminsional plane or surface gets smaller as the eye goes towards the horizon line.  Horizon line is where the sky and earth meets.  I used a #2 liner brush and a #1 round brush to line paint in the features.

Next I continued to use my same brushes as in the previous step, however this time as you notice the background is being develop. The sky is painted in a broken color technique where the blue in the sky itself has a variety of values of blue with hints of yellow and green enter mixed.  The form of the cloud structure is established and color is being added over the top of the under painting.

Finally, in this stage of the painting I change from the previous brushes to a #4 flat brush to paint in the distant mountain range, trees and hay field.  More details is added to the land and clouds.  In order to create atmospheric depth, I mixed in some blue with green to disaturate the color in the mountains.

Pastel Portrait Drawing with Charcoal

"Lady with a Hood" 7x8 done in soft pastel on Canson Pastel Paper copyright DWeaver Art ©

Back in 2011 I completed this drawing in soft pastels.  I had purchased a set of Jack Richeson & Co., Inc. from a local Hobby Lobby.  The set of pastels came in a quanity of 48.  This is one of the first soft pastel drawing I had done and after I completed this I was very pleased.  I had self taught myself to draw in soft pastel and no formal training.  I used a cotton swab and my fingers to blend in the different colors.  Till this day I continue to use Jack Richeson & Co., Inc. soft pastels.  Thank you for viewing and reading my blog. Acylic Painting of Lightning and Full Moon

"Moon Lightning" done in acrylic 12x16 copyright DWeaver Art ©

For as long as I remember being fascinated with weather, I have always thought that lighting in a distance during a full moon night is totally amazing.  It just captivates me.  My attention is instantly anchored on the beautiful night time sky.  I love clear starry nights where there is a full moon with it.  However, when there is lightning with that beautiful starry moon light sky it make the sky truly amazing.  This is my inspiration for doing "Moon Lightning".  This painting is an expression of my passion for weather and art.

Orange Storm Painting at Sunset

"Orange Storm at Sunset"
Acrylic painting 5x6 on mixed media Canson Paper by DWeaver Art © 2017

This painting was inspired by a desire I had last week to paint a lightning storm at sunset.  Whether there is a storm at sunset or not I just love to see a beautiful color filled sky.  This is what I wanted to express.  I have always been fascinated with thunderstorm and lightning especially at sunset or at night.  I used a small #4 filbert brush, a #2 liner brush and a #8 flat brush with Master's Touch acrylic paints to produce this painting.
I want to thank you for viewing and reading my blog.  If you are interested in this painting or having any comments or questions for me please email me at deeweaver15@gmail.com

Plein Air Painting by the River Bank

I have been enjoying this summer.  However the weather and season will be changing soon.  Here is a picture I took of the Tennessee River.  I took this picture before I started to unload my painting supplies.  I liked what I was seeing.  Here is some small trees at the edge of the river bank.

I started out with a very quick under painting done in a yellow ocher wash.  I used a small flat brush and a liner brush to establish the main features of the landscape before adding color and more detail.

This is the finish photo of the painting alone with the scenery of the landscape.  At this time as you notice the sun has went down behind the trees to the west of my set up.

"Cumulonimbus near Soybean Field" 16x20 done in Acrylic

I just love storms.  Ever since I was a teenager I have been fascinated with weather and particularly thunderstorms.  I just love their structure, color and the lightning they produce.   I drew this composition up from a thumbnail drawing done in graphite and transfer the concept to the canvas as a under painting to eventually adding color.  My goal with this painting is to trigger a memory or a delight in storms that you have perhaps seen before with the sunlight casting a shadow over the field.  I hope this paint pleases your eye and emotion.  Thank you for viewing my art blog.  If you have any questions are comments feel free to comment below or send me an email deeweaver15@gmail.com

How to Draw a Still Life in Charcoal of Sugar Bowl and Tea Pitcher

This is my art set up or display for a live drawing.  I have my drawing pad to the left and my still life display to the right.  I am left handed and by setting up this display as so it free's my right hand to make comparative measurements.  I have cut out a cardboard box.  A hole is cut at the top of the box to create an opening to cast light and shadow on the display.

This is the beginning stage the line drawing.  I have drawn in contour lines to outline the form.

I have drawn in the details at this stage.  However, there is no values created through shading at this point.

Now I have taken the time to shade in the values, especially the background.  Also you may notice the cast shadow is formed.

This is the final stage.  If you observe diligently, I have refined the details by darkening the values even more.  At the bottom of the photo there are my drawing tools.  I used a skewer stick to measure my subject.  I have in the picture a paper stump, willow charcoal sticks, sand paper to sharpen my charcoal, chamois cloth and eraser.   I did not use any graphite on this drawing only charcoal although they are with the supplies.

Process of Still Life Painting Pear and Apple

Last week I started on another still life painting.  I was inspired on a new technique to shift in a different direction in the way I paint.  I wanted to expose more of my brush strokes in my painting.  I am still learning how to paint more in a impressionistic style with  the use of broken color.  I took an old soft pastel painting I did and changed the back ground color.to more of an aqua blue. I did not use a palette knife, instead I only used a flat brush and a liner brush for details.

In the first stage I diluted brown wash of acrylic to tone the paper.  The paper is a Canson mixed media.  I used a flat brush to produce the line drawing of the forms.  I also establish the shadow maps for the dark values to be blocked in later.

In stage two I continued to use a flat brush however a had more brown paint than water in the mixed to get a darker value for the shadow zones.  Also I establish the highlight zones by allowing the lightest value to be left exposed.  At this stage not only a dark value is blocked in but also a middle value is blocked.

In stage three I premixed my paint into 4 groups blues, reds, greens, and light values of brown. I always use a palette knife to mixed my color out.  I'am using glass to mix my colors on and lay out.

Stage four I started to add color to the background using the blue values I had premixed earlier.

Finally I added more color the values of green red and browns.

How to make a Seascape Painting

This is considered a seascape according to the type of painting it is.  However, this is actually a lake painting. It is a painting of a lake in North Alabama called "Cedar Lake".  I was inspired to paint this painting from a photo sent by email to me from a friend who fish on this lake.  It is a very beautiful place.  As you can see it was taken at sunset.  I altered the painting from the original photo reference to have a reflection of sunlight that is more exaggerated.  I wanted to capture the ripples of the waves in the lake and used the sunlight as a point of emphasis or focal point in the composition.  Also it is a painting in an abstract color scheme from reality.

I started with a value sketch from my sketch journal.  I only used 5 values of gray to accomplish the sketch. I used a mechanical no.2 pencil in graphite.

Next, I toned the paper with a brown or burnt sienna color.  I diluted color or paint with water to achieve a lighter value and used less water in the color to get darker values. I used a large flat brush to tone the surface evenly all over to get the lightest value.  Then I used a smaller flat to draw and block in the darker values.

I used the color green blue yellow and white to premix the colors.  I use a glass palette because it cleans better when I finish painting sessions.  I use a rounded end metal palette knife to mix the hues or original colors. I add blue to darken the greens and I use white to tint or lighten the colors.

Here is the finished painting very small in size 4x4 done in acrylic of Cedar Lake
