Winter Sunset is a painting I finished on February 19, 2018. I love sunsets and so I drew out this composition to paint a winter scene. In the winter time the atmosphere is more clearer at sunrise and sunsets than most seasons of the your my opinion. I used a liner brush and a #2 bright brush to produce this painting. The composition has a tree line at the horizon going all the way across the picture plan. There is also a road going from the foreground toward the horizon. As the road meets the horizon line the tree line is broken due to the path of the road which has ice reflecting of the sun as it sets in the background. This is the second of three sites from the Shoals area in a series I entitle "Sites of the Shoals" In this blog I want to share with you all my interest in the area I live. The Shoals in an area of northwest Alabama where the Tennessee river flows through. The River is the most dominate land feature of the area. The Series I call Sites of the Shoals will show cast from an artist perspective on the man made structures in the area. Oneal Bridge is named after Gov. Edward A. Oneal of Alabama whose family resided in Florence, Alabama Oneal bridge was built back in 1939 and is also called the Tennessee River Bridge. At one time before the late 1980's a walk way existed and ran right in the middle of the bridge. I believe that the good Lord has a special plan for the Shoals area that is being worked out from generation to generation to make a powerful impact in the world. I am fortunate to be a native of this region. I remember traveling home across the Oneal bridge with my first and later second born son. It has an ultimate purpose like most bridges to connect two points of reference. It provides efficient access and safety for it's travelers.

I draw this picture from a reference but altered the image of the bridge angle. I made it in to a one point perspective design composition with the moon being it's center of emphasis. I used a #2B graphite general's pencil drew in the detail of the features.
Next I worked from the 5 values created from the thumbnail to produce a miniature blueprint painting study. This was done to see if what I had imagined from my mind was accurate or come close to reality. I used phthalocyannine blue,sky blue, grey, black and white master's touch acrylic paint. Finally, I used these colors to mix into the 5 values you see for the water and sky.
Purple Lake is an inspired piece from a previous painting I did that is very small. This piece is made for all of you blue and purple color lovers. My goal with the piece is to ecite your emotions. Most of the people I have asked around like blue or purple. I tend to like blue myself. I hope you have enjoyed this weeks blog post. I love country rural scenes in nature. Here is a dirt road with a mountain range in the background. Also a large hay field with bales of hay. I have been lately drawn to the dirt road or path in my landscapes. When an artist uses a path whether that be a paved road, dirt road, gravel road, or even a trail their intention is to direct the viewer's eye through the composition to the focal point. Here the focal point is in the distant background.
To begin with I used raw umber as the under painting to lay out the composition design and establish the illusion of depth with one point perspective. One point perspective is when an object in a two deminsional plane or surface gets smaller as the eye goes towards the horizon line. Horizon line is where the sky and earth meets. I used a #2 liner brush and a #1 round brush to line paint in the features.
Next I continued to use my same brushes as in the previous step, however this time as you notice the background is being develop. The sky is painted in a broken color technique where the blue in the sky itself has a variety of values of blue with hints of yellow and green enter mixed. The form of the cloud structure is established and color is being added over the top of the under painting.
Finally, in this stage of the painting I change from the previous brushes to a #4 flat brush to paint in the distant mountain range, trees and hay field. More details is added to the land and clouds. In order to create atmospheric depth, I mixed in some blue with green to disaturate the color in the mountains.
Back in 2011 I completed this drawing in soft pastels. I had purchased a set of Jack Richeson & Co., Inc. from a local Hobby Lobby. The set of pastels came in a quanity of 48. This is one of the first soft pastel drawing I had done and after I completed this I was very pleased. I had self taught myself to draw in soft pastel and no formal training. I used a cotton swab and my fingers to blend in the different colors. Till this day I continue to use Jack Richeson & Co., Inc. soft pastels. Thank you for viewing and reading my blog. For as long as I remember being fascinated with weather, I have always thought that lighting in a distance during a full moon night is totally amazing. It just captivates me. My attention is instantly anchored on the beautiful night time sky. I love clear starry nights where there is a full moon with it. However, when there is lightning with that beautiful starry moon light sky it make the sky truly amazing. This is my inspiration for doing "Moon Lightning". This painting is an expression of my passion for weather and art.
